MoonPay disclosed that it received an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license from the Dutch Central Bank (De Nederlandsche Bank, DNB) on September 8. This approval enables MoonPay to issue regulated euro-denominated stablecoins from the Netherlands and expand its business beyond cryptocurrency trading into the payments sector.
License covers stablecoins and payment services
The company stated that this license not only permits it to issue euro-stablecoins but also opens the door to offering payment accounts, payment services, and card products to individuals and businesses. Since the EMI license is valid across the European Economic Area, MoonPay can leverage its Dutch entity to provide these services to a broader European market.
This means MoonPay will have more comprehensive in-house compliance capabilities for connecting traditional currencies with digital assets, without fully relying on external banking partners.
Holding a MiCA-compliant CASP authorization
Prior to this approval, MoonPay had already obtained a MiCA-licensed Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) authorization from the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets. The newly acquired EMI license now adds regulatory compliance for electronic money and payment services.
According to the company, this adds regulated payment and electronic money capabilities beyond its existing cryptocurrency business framework, laying the foundation for future stablecoin product launches.
The plan continues to advance the euro stablecoin product.
MoonPay stated that over the coming months, it will continue to expand its offerings in payment accounts, stablecoin issuance, and card products. The company noted that it has now become the third entity in the Netherlands to hold both a MiCA CASP license and an EMI license under the same legal entity.
MoonPay also stated that it is the first company among such institutions to combine both licenses with the ability to issue open stablecoins. For MoonPay, the new license fills a critical payment component needed for stablecoin expansion, and the next focus will be to directly integrate euro stablecoins with European payment products.
