ChainCatcher report: Mirae Asset Consulting has acquired majority control of Korbit, South Korea’s earliest cryptocurrency exchange, increasing its stake to 97.15% in a transaction valued at approximately KRW 141.4 billion, equivalent to about $95 million to $102 million USD. The Korea Fair Trade Commission approved the transaction on July 9, 2026, concluding that the acquisition is unlikely to restrict competition, noting Korbit’s approximately 0.5% market share in South Korea’s cryptocurrency trading market in 2025. Mirae Asset stated that Korbit’s operating entity, user deposits, and core trading services will remain unchanged for now, with client assets continuing to be segregated and protected under existing rules. Korbit will be rebranded as Digital X. Park Hyeon-joo, founder and Global Strategy Officer of Mirae Asset, said Digital X is central to Mirae Asset’s three-pillar strategy, aiming to connect real-world asset tokenization, security token offerings, stablecoins, traditional securities, and digital assets on a single platform. Mirae Asset emphasized that Digital X is not intended to surpass Upbit or Bithumb in trading volume, but rather to serve as an infrastructure platform integrating Mirae’s securities and asset management expertise with Korbit’s digital asset operations. Digital X will initially operate using Korbit’s existing licenses and user base.
