Benzinga Pro data showed Micron Technology shares gaining 1.00% to $886.35 in Monday's premarket session as broader market sentiment improved. Nasdaq futures advanced 0.20%. S&P 500 futures increased 0.15%. An AI-driven rally has lifted Micron more than 200% year-to-date. Micron has gained 298.71% over the past 12 months amid enthusiasm for AI hardware.
Rayliant Global Advisors Chairman and Chief Investment Officer Jason Hsu warned that the memory chip industry may be nearing a cyclical peak. Hsu said on CNBC on Monday that tight supply and stronger prices have replaced excess inventory and weak pricing. However, Hsu said prospects beyond the next two years remain uncertain as lower-cost competitors in China increase production. Hsu warned that additional supply could eventually create excess inventory and push memory chip prices lower.
Hsu said China's advantage in artificial intelligence could increasingly depend on hardware and infrastructure rather than software revenue. Hsu identified cheaper electricity, less expensive AI models and industry consolidation as possible advantages for companies in China. Current demand supports spending on AI infrastructure. However, Hsu expects increasing supply and competition to pressure memory chipmakers over time.
Micron continues to show a long-term upward trend despite recent weakness. Micron trades 21.6% above the 200-day simple moving average (SMA). The 50-day SMA remains higher than the 200-day SMA, supporting the upward trend. However, Micron trades 9.8% below the 20-day SMA. Micron trades 9.4% below the 50-day SMA. Micron trades 8.5% below the 100-day SMA. Those moving averages could constrain short-term rebounds. The moving average convergence divergence (MACD) indicator points to weakening momentum. The MACD sits below the signal line and has a negative histogram.
Micron faces key resistance at $1,042.50. Support lies around $887.50. A rise above resistance could improve the prospects for a recovery. However, a fall below support could intensify selling pressure. Micron's 52-week trading range extends from $192.40 to $1,255. Traders may monitor the August swing low as support. Traders may monitor the September swing high as possible resistance.
Analysts have a consensus Buy rating for Micron and an average price forecast of $1,622.38. Rosenblatt kept a Buy rating and a $1,900 price target on October 22. Needham retained a Buy rating and a $1,650 price target on the same day. Rosenblatt had also reaffirmed a Buy rating and a $1,900 price target on October 13. Micron trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 11.8.
