Michael Saylor explained that Strategy’s Bitcoin sales were part of a broader trading strategy, not a reversal of his personal stance. The firm sold 1,638 BTC on August 3, 2026, bringing total disposals to 5,258 BTC, or $335 million, since June. Saylor clarified his “not selling” comment applied to personal holdings. Critics like Peter Schiff accused him of misleading the public. The market showed little reaction, but the community questioned the firm’s commitment. Scalping strategy elements may have influenced the timing of the sales.
  • Strategy sold 1,638 BTC on August 3.
  • In total, the company has sold $335 million worth of the first cryptocurrency.
  • Saylor said his call to “not sell bitcoin” applied to his personal holdings, not the firm as a whole.
  • Schiff called him a liar.

The co-founder of Strategy, the largest corporate holder of the first cryptocurrency, commented on the company’s latest bitcoin sale. Since switching to the new strategy, the firm has sold 5,258 BTC.

As a reminder, on August 3, 2026, Strategy sold 1,638 BTC. The funds were used to cover dividend obligations and buy back shares.

This was not the first bitcoin sale, so the market reaction was muted. At the same time, the community still criticizes Strategy and Saylor, as the face of the company, for “not keeping their promise.”

In response, the company’s co-founder said the following:

“When I say, “Never sell your bitcoin,” I’m speaking to you as one holder to another. I have never sold mine. Not one satoshi. Strategy is a public company, not my wallet. Since 2020, the company has disclosed that it may buy or sell bitcoin for capital management purposes. Our shared conviction in Bitcoin remains unchanged.”

Peter Schiff, a well-known skeptic and critic of cryptocurrencies in general and Strategy in particular, responded as follows:

“Yes, but you understood perfectly well the impression you were creating, and you never bothered to clarify it. So either this was a deliberate attempt to mislead, or you really meant that Strategy would never sell bitcoin, and now you’re lying to cover your ass. Either way, it’s bad.”

How Many Bitcoins Did the Company Sell?

Despite Saylor’s remarks that Strategy had previously stated it could reduce its holdings, the company shifted to a monetization strategy for its crypto assets in late June 2026.

Before that, there was a small test sale that, despite the tranche size, sparked significant buzz in the crypto community. In total, the company sold 5,258 BTC (about $335 million).

Meanwhile, Galaxy Digital CEO Mike Novogratz said that Strategy was to blame for bitcoin’s crash, as it created a crisis of confidence.
