Meta's Muse is a personal AI agent that can book travel, fill out forms, and shop on behalf of users, and it has already gained popularity among many. However, a new side project may particularly appeal to developers and hackers who enjoy tinkering and working with hardware.
On Friday, Meta launched Muse Gadgets, an open-source project that enables developers to build their own hardware compatible with Muse.
Meta provides open-source firmware—the underlying software that runs the device—as well as a Linux software development kit (SDK) and some initial project ideas. These include equipping the Muse with a color e-ink display or embedding it into a stick device that plugs into a TV’s HDMI port.
The restrictions also appear to be minimal. Users can set up an affordable hobbyist computer, such as a Raspberry Pi, or directly use a ready-made ESP32 development board, then connect Muse to “your display, buttons, sensors, actuators, and any other items on your workbench,” according to Meta.
Meta has also established a Discord channel to support users.
Meta has also tested this code themselves. Nat Friedman, Product Lead at Meta Superintelligence Labs, posted on X that the company has developed a device called Muse Home Link. This USB-C-powered device enables Muse to connect to a home network and communicate with smart devices on the network, including speakers and smart TVs.
Friedman said that Meta actually produced 5,000 Home Link devices and will give them away for free to Muse subscribers until they run out. Given that Friedman’s post about Home Link garnered nearly 30,000 views within hours, we suspect these free slots have likely already been claimed. Friedman also said that Home Link will be ready to ship in a few weeks.
Muse Gadgets may not have broad appeal, but it aligns well with Meta’s overall strategy: making Muse more than just a standalone chatbot. Meta isn’t content with simply promoting Muse to general consumers—it’s also targeting small businesses and enterprises.
Earlier this week, the company launched Muse for Small Business, a free service with usage limits that integrates with tools such as Shopify, Dropbox, and Slack. Meta has also established a new business unit, Meta Enterprise Platform, to drive its AI products for enterprise and corporate customers.
