Meta announced an AI restructuring plan on May 19, effective May 20, including a 10% workforce reduction and the reassignment of 7,000 employees to AI projects. The initiative aims to improve the risk-to-reward ratio of internal workflows by flattening management structures and transitioning to smaller teams. Key initiatives include AAI, ATA, and Central Analytics. The company also closed 6,000 open positions, with total changes impacting approximately 20% of its 77,986 employees as of March 31. Internal backlash is growing, with over 1,000 employees protesting a mouse-tracking tool used for AI training. Support and resistance levels within the company are shifting as the restructuring progresses.

BlockBeats report, May 19: According to Reuters, Meta disclosed in an internal memo a restructuring plan set to begin on May 20. The company will cut 10% of its global workforce and simultaneously implement a new organizational restructuring to optimize AI workflows. Meta’s Chief Human Resources Officer, Janelle Gale, stated that the company plans to relocate 7,000 employees to new projects related to AI workflows and reduce certain management roles. After the adjustments, more teams will operate in a flatter structure, organized into smaller “pods” or “cohorts,” to enhance efficiency and autonomy.

This restructuring is part of Meta’s 2024 AI transformation initiative, focusing on AI projects including Applied AI Engineering (AAI), Agent Transformation Accelerator (ATA), and Central Analytics, with the goal of developing AI agents capable of autonomously performing tasks. Meta previously closed 6,000 open positions. Reports indicate that this round of layoffs and role adjustments will collectively affect approximately 20% of employees. As of the end of March this year, Meta had a total of 77,986 employees. Meanwhile, dissatisfaction with the restructuring plan within the company is growing, with over 1,000 employees having signed a petition opposing mouse-tracking software used to train AI models.
