MARA Holdings Stock Drops as it Sells its Bitcoin
MARA Holdings, one of the top Bitcoin mining companies, released a mixed financial report on Thursday. One of the key statements in the report is that the company reduced its Bitcoin holdings as it continues its pivot towards the artificial intelligence (AI) industry.
In a statement, the company said that it now holds 35,577 coins, down substantially from 49,951 coins a year earlier. Of these coins, 26,307 are unrestricted, while 4,528 have been pledged as collateral. The remaining coins have been loaned.
One reason for the decline in its Bitcoin holdings is that the company is spending huge sums of money in the AI industry. This is the same strategy that other Bitcoin mining companies, such as Riot Platforms, TeraWulf, and Cipher Mining, use.
The results showed that its revenues declined by 27% during the quarter to $175 million. This happened because of the falling Bitcoin prices, which were partially offset by its Bitcoin production. Its production rose by 3% to 2,422 coins, while Bitcoin has been in a downward trend in the past few months. After peaking at $126,300 in October last year, it has now dropped to $64,000.
MARA Holdings continued generating losses during the quarter. It made a net loss of over $611 million, a sharp reversal from a $808 million profit in the same period last year. The loss also occurred as the cost of mining Bitcoin continued to rise due to elevated power costs. The cost per petahash per day rose by 4% to $27.7.
MARA is Pivoting to AI Data Center
Like other companies, MARA Holdings is changing its business model as the core Bitcoin mining businesses faces some major challenges, including its volatility. Also, the cost of mining Bitcoin has continued rising as energy prices and mining difficulty have jumped.
In its case, it is working to focus on owning the power, with the management arguing that it is the main scarce asset, rather than GPUs. As a result, it is working to control natural gas power plants, grid interconnections, and large land parcels. It is also gradually converting its mining operations into AI campuses.
Most notably, it has launched a partnership with Starwood Digital Ventures, which is owned by a large asset manager with billions of dollars in value.
Still, the business faces some major challenges, which explains why stocks of some of the biggest companies in the industry, like CoreWeave, IREN, and Nebius have plunged in the past few weeks. For one, the cost of building these campuses is enormous as the prices of GPUs, memory, and servers surge.
Also, the industry is highly competitive, with most Bitcoin mining companies launching similar products. Also, other companies like SpaceX, CoreWeave, Nebius, and Meta are launching similar products.
MARA Stock Price Technical Analysis
The daily chart shows that MARA shares have plunged over the past few months, falling from a high of $16.47 to the current $10.15. It has formed a descending channel and is nearing the lower side.

The stock has dropped below the 50-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA), a sign that bears remain in control. Notably, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) has formed a descending channel.
Therefore, the stock will likely continue falling, potentially to the key support level of $6.67, its lowest level in February.
