Bitcoin news turned to MARA Holdings on Sept. 16 after on-chain data showed the miner receiving 1,292 BTC through FalconX. The transaction was worth roughly $98.64 million at prevailing prices.
The transfer comes as Bitcoin trades below recent highs and short-term holders send more loss-making coins to exchanges. MARA stock also remains under pressure after JPMorgan downgraded the miner and cut its price target.
Bitcoin News: MARA Adds 1,292 BTC Through FalconX
Lookonchain reported the 1,292 BTC transaction early Wednesday and linked the transfer to MARA Holdings. The Bitcoin news marks a change from the company’s activity earlier in 2026, when it sold BTC to fund operations and capital projects. MARA’s latest quarterly filing shows that it held 35,577 BTC on June 30, including 9,270 BTC that MARA loaned or pledged as collateral.

MARA also told shareholders that it bought no Bitcoin during the second quarter. Instead, the miner produced 2,422 BTC during that period and continued using part of its treasury through lending and collateral arrangements.
The company has not yet published a new audited holdings figure that incorporates the September 16 transaction. This structure shows that MARA uses Bitcoin for treasury exposure and financing rather than keeping every coin idle on its balance sheet.
Bitcoin Selling Rises After Senate Vote
The purchase lands during a weaker stretch for Bitcoin. CryptoQuant data shows short-term holders sent about 23,200 BTC to exchanges at a loss over 24 hours, the largest such loss transfer recorded during the past month. Its chart shows the loss flow rising sharply as Bitcoin moved toward the mid-$75,000 area.

The selling followed the U.S. Senate’s September 15 vote on the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. Senators rejected cloture on the motion to proceed to H.R. 3633 by a 49-50 vote. The measure needed three-fifths support to advance at that stage. The vote did not pass the procedural threshold, leaving the bill without Senate debate under that motion.
MARA Stock Slips as JPMorgan Cuts Rating
MARA shares closed September 15 at $11.24, down 2.26% during the session. The stock moved near $11.20 in early pre-market trading on September 16, according to the market chart. The decline came after JPMorgan downgraded MARA to Underweight and lowered its price target from $13 to $11.
The downgrade adds another factor for investors tracking the company’s shift beyond Bitcoin mining. MARA has expanded its focus toward power and compute infrastructure as demand from artificial intelligence developers increases. In its second-quarter shareholder letter, the company said power-ready sites have become a key constraint for AI data centers.

Meanwhile, an analyst shared that if Bitcoin price fails to close the week above $78,000, selling pressure could increase. BTC was trading near $75,900, leaving the level about 2.8% higher. The analyst views a weekly reclaim of $78,000 as important for improving the short-term structure.
AI Safety Debate Adds Another Market Variable
The Bitcoin news also comes during a fresh debate over the pace of frontier AI development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for companies to slow improvements in advanced model capabilities so safety work can keep pace. His proposal includes independent model evaluations and closer coordination across the industry.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk also backed calls for greater caution around advanced AI systems, while other technology figures have raised different views on how regulation should work.
