Today's Observation
Lumentum delivered a quarter with revenue more than doubling, driven primarily by demand for optical interconnects in AI data centers, with both its components and systems businesses exceeding expectations. The company’s guidance for the next quarter’s revenue and profitability also significantly surpassed market expectations, with management stating that this guidance implies achieving its target operating model more than one quarter ahead of schedule.
Data per minute
Undefined net revenue for Q4 FY2026 was $1.0063 billion, representing a 109.3% year-over-year increase and a 24.5% sequential increase, exceeding the market consensus estimate of approximately $985 million.
On a segment basis, component business revenue was $649.4 million and system business revenue was $356.9 million; the combined total matches the overall revenue and exceeds the forecast for each segment.
Non-GAAP net profit of $326.3 million, diluted earnings per share of $3.23, above the market consensus estimate of approximately $2.95.
Under GAAP, the net loss was $7.2 billion, and the diluted loss per share was $84.65, primarily due to a one-time, non-cash debt extinguishment loss of approximately $7.8 billion from the conversion of certain convertible bonds during the quarter, with no impact on operations or cash outflows.
In terms of profitability, the non-GAAP gross margin is 50.4% and the operating margin is 36.6%; the GAAP gross margin is 47.4% and the operating margin is 27.8%.
Undefined net revenue for the full fiscal year FY2026 was $3.01 billion, an 83.2% year-over-year increase.
Next quarter guidance: FY2027 Q1 revenue of $1.225 billion to $1.275 billion (midpoint $1.25 billion), above the consensus estimate of $1.16 billion; Non-GAAP diluted EPS guidance of $4.05 to $4.35 (midpoint $4.20), above the consensus estimate of $3.63; Non-GAAP operating margin guidance of 39.5% to 40.5%.
The company identified growth drivers including progress on 1.6T optical circuit switch (OCS) solutions and cloud module business, increased demand for ultra-high-power CPO lasers, and the first order for ELS modules.
MSX View
Lumentum's performance over the past quarter was broadly solid: revenue more than doubled year-over-year and increased nearly a quarter sequentially, with both components and systems showing strength; Non-GAAP gross margin exceeded 50%, and operating margin approached 37%, reflecting aligned growth in scale and profitability. The GAAP loss of $7.2 billion stemmed entirely from a one-time, non-cash accounting treatment related to convertible bond conversions and is unrelated to operations—but its sheer magnitude requires careful distinction when interpreting the figures. What truly matters is the guidance for the next quarter: the midpoint of revenue forecast is about 7.8% above consensus expectations, and the midpoint of EPS is roughly 16% higher, with management explicitly stating they have surpassed their target model more than a quarter ahead of schedule, indicating that demand for AI data center optical interconnects is materializing faster than the company previously anticipated. The key variables going forward are how many quarters this outperformance can be sustained and whether next-generation products such as 1.6T and CPO can scale sufficiently to meet demand.
