Lula wins Brazil election, keeping political distance from Trump. On-chain data shows mixed sentiment as Brazil’s equities dipped overnight. Altcoins to watch may react to shifting geopolitical dynamics. Lula’s return follows 2022 win over Bolsonaro, with campaign focused on democratic values and U.S. influence concerns. Major ETFs and ADRs fell sharply after results were finalized.

Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated Senator Flávio Bolsonaro to secure another term, extending Brazil's political divide with President Donald Trump. The Associated Press reported on Sunday that electoral authorities declared Lula the winner after counting all votes. Lula's next term is scheduled to start on January 5, 2027.

The result runs against regional gains by right-leaning candidates aligned with Trump. Brazil and Mexico, Latin America's two most populous countries, remain governed by left-of-center leaders. Brazil's $2.6 trillion economy appears likely to retain some independence from Washington despite Trump's tariffs and pressure on trade.

A Supreme Court justice extended voting by two hours through a last-minute decision, causing confusion at polling stations on election night. The Associated Press said the extension could lead Bolsonaro to pursue legal action.

Lula finished behind Flávio Bolsonaro in the first round before refocusing Lula's campaign on younger voters, democratic values and concerns about another Bolsonaro administration. Lula also emphasized national sovereignty. Lula argued that a Bolsonaro presidency could increase Washington's influence over Brazil.

Lula, a former union leader, helped found the Workers' Party and won presidential elections in 2002 and 2006. Lula's successor, Dilma Rousseff, won reelection in 2014 but was impeached in 2016 amid a corruption scandal that also implicated Lula. Lula spent 580 days in prison following a corruption conviction before Brazil's Supreme Court annulled Lula's sentence over concerns about judicial bias. Lula subsequently defeated former President Jair Bolsonaro in 2022.

Brazil's equities declined in overnight trading. The iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ) fell 18.36%. The Franklin FTSE Brazil ETF (FLBR) dropped 10.31%. The iShares MSCI Brazil Small-Cap ETF (EWZS) lost 17.80%.

Brazil's American depositary receipts also fell during overnight trading. Itaú Unibanco Holding (ITUB) declined 13.86%. Ambev (ABEV) lost 9.39%. Vale (VALE) fell 3.15%. Nu Holdings Ltd. (NU) dropped 11.54%. Embraer S.A. (EMBJ) declined 0.54%.
