Lightning Labs has launched a new website for the L402 protocol, a channel for AI and crypto news and machine-to-machine Bitcoin payments. The protocol enables AI agents to transact on the Lightning Network without accounts or intermediaries. The company clarified that while the site is new, the protocol is already in use by Lightning Loop, a non-custodial exchange service. This represents a protocol update in the ongoing development of Lightning Network tools.

ChainCatcher report, according to The Defiant, Lightning Labs—the company behind the Lightning Network’s development tools—launched a dedicated website for the L402 protocol on Wednesday, positioning it as a channel for AI agents to make payments in Bitcoin. The company stated that with L402, agents can pay in Bitcoin and natively authenticate without requiring accounts, intermediaries, or human intervention, describing L402 as the protocol for machine-to-machine commerce on Lightning. According to its disclosure, what was newly added is the website, not the protocol itself. L402, or the Lightning HTTP 402 protocol, has already existed within Lightning Labs’ technology stack; its standard implementation, Aperture, is currently used by the non-custodial exchange service Lightning Loop. The mechanism repurposes the HTTP 402 status code: when a client requests a restricted endpoint, the server responds with a 402 status and an authentication header containing a token and a Lightning invoice. After the client makes payment, it uses the token and payment preimage to access the endpoint; the server can verify the payment without querying a payment database.
