Libya’s regulatory crackdown on crypto mining has escalated, with nine miners jailed in November 2025 for operating Bitcoin equipment at a Zawiya steel plant. Equipment was seized, and illicit profits returned. While the Central Bank banned crypto transactions in 2018, mining has continued, often prosecuted under charges like illegal power use. Legal expert Nadia Mohammed said mining isn’t explicitly illegal, urging the central bank to issue licenses instead of letting the sector run unchecked. The move adds pressure on risk-on assets amid tightening controls.
