Ledger itself announced the suspension of sales through Mediamarkt stores and online, clarifying that this applies only to a temporary hold "during the investigation."
The announcement followed a wave of accusations on social media platform X, where several accounts claimed that Ledger hardware wallets purchased from European resellers had been physically compromised.
PSA: The Ledger incident is not limited to Asia. This is a device purchased in-store from an official reseller in Europe (a legitimate device does not have any of these cables, as shown in Picture 2). This appears to even be an older version of the “spy implant,” despite the device being purchased just a few weeks ago. Newer versions typically conceal the implant near the screen, making it easier to miss. What’s interesting is that this compromised Ledger never transferred funds to an attacker—either the device didn’t work, or they were waiting for broader usage of compromised devices? If you own a Ledger that did not come directly from the Ledger online store, don’t just rely on software verification—physically open the device yourself to confirm its authenticity. Reported cases have now emerged in Asia, South America, and Europe. @MagicalTux has created helpful videos on how to open a Ledger and what to look for.

Ledger directly acknowledged that the cessation of sales through Mediamarkt followed "
message about a chip from one customer in Germany.” However, the company assures that “no funds were lost.”
Competitor of Ledger, Trezor, also
announced on Tuesday, October 13, that it is reducing the number of resale partners in connection with incidents surrounding Ledger.
Ledger encountered issues following reports that unknown actors were stealing funds from hardware wallet owners. Initially, the reported losses were estimated at around $86 million, but the estimates later rose to $93 million. Shortly afterward, Ledger announced that its investigation is focused on devices sold by Cryptobilis—a reseller operating in Southeast Asia.
