Prediction markets platform Kalshi has accused Netflix of defamation over the trailer for the documentary *Instadocs: The Prediction Games*. Kalshi claims the trailer includes misleading content, such as a $5,000 contract tied to a Spain World Cup win, which it says was created before Nevada restrictions. The firm also disputes the use of the term "bet slip," which it says does not appear on its platform. Netflix denies the claims, stating no footage was fabricated and that the contract was opened in 2025, before any restrictions. The dispute comes amid growing interest in price prediction and Bitcoin price prediction tools.
  • Kalshi sent Netflix a letter over a trailer about prediction markets.
  • The platform said the betting footage around the World Cup was “fabricated.”
  • It is demanding that the streaming service remove the trailer.

Prediction markets platform Kalshi sent Netflix a formal letter demanding it stop distributing the trailer for the documentary Instadocs: The Prediction Games, CNN reports. The company said the video contains “defamatory,” “fabricated,” and misleading material that could create the impression that users traded sports contracts in Nevada in violation of a court order.

Kalshi Demands Trailer Removal

Netflix published the trailer for the documentary Instadocs: The Prediction Games, which is set to premiere on July 27. It shows traders at a party in Las Vegas during the FIFA World Cup final, showcasing their profits on prediction markets, including via Kalshi.

The company’s biggest complaint centered on a shot of one guest’s phone, which allegedly shows a $5,000 Kalshi contract predicting Spain to win.

In its cease-and-desist letter, Kalshi said the trailer includes both fabricated documents and false and misleading statements.

According to the company, the screenshot shown in the trailer was actually taken back on May 16, 2025, long before court restrictions were introduced in Nevada. Kalshi claims Netflix created the false impression that these trades took place after the court order went into effect.

Recall that after a Nevada court extended the ban on Kalshi trading contracts on sporting events, the company was forced to restrict the relevant markets in the state.

In addition, the platform said the screenshot uses terms like “bet slip,” which have never been used in the Kalshi interface. This is especially important because the company deliberately avoids words like “bet” or “gambling,” positioning its products as exchange-traded derivatives contracts rather than gambling.

Kalshi Chief Marketing Officer Brandon Bechardt said:

“Netflix had a chance to make a genuinely interesting documentary about prediction markets. Instead, they made a sensationalized film built on fiction.

Netflix Rejects the Allegations

Netflix confirmed that the video was filmed during the Winible World Cup Watch Weekend event in Las Vegas, but stressed that the contract shown was opened back in 2025 — before any court restrictions.

A company spokesperson said:

“Netflix upholds the highest standards of journalistic integrity in its documentary programming. No footage in Instadocs: The Prediction Games was fabricated.”

According to Netflix, the trader merely showed an old screenshot of his trade, and any specific transactions remain the responsibility of the user and the platform through which they were executed.

Notably, the dispute comes at a time when Kalshi is already under significant regulatory pressure. In recent months:

  • The Washington State attorney general filed a lawsuit against the platform, accusing it of violating local gambling laws
  • The Wisconsin Department of Justice also went to court against Kalshi over sports prediction markets
  • Earlier, Spotify demanded that Kalshi remove the company’s logo after manipulation of music charts was discovered, which affected the related prediction markets
