BlockBeats news, on August 6, CNBC reported that JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon warned that current market leverage remains high, with margin debt reaching historic highs, and some borrowing is not directly classified as margin debt but is instead concealed within prime brokers, hedge funds, ETFs, and U.S. Treasury arbitrage strategies.
Damon stated that high leverage increases the likelihood that a single investor or fund could rapidly disrupt the market and trigger broader volatility. Recently, the AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness faced margin calls due to failed leveraged bets on tech stocks and was forced to liquidate most of its publicly traded stock portfolio.
However, Dimon did not define the current leverage levels as a systemic threat. He stated that the overall market is still capable of absorbing the failure of individual institutions and emphasized that the current environment differs from the 2008 financial crisis, when the real shock came from massive losses imminent in the mortgage market—not leverage itself.
Damon also noted that when market volatility rises, clearinghouses and banks typically require more collateral. Meanwhile, government deficits, infrastructure investment, and global rearmament could reignite inflationary pressures and support higher long-term interest rates.
