Morning Minute (Tyler Warner) — the views here are his own and don’t necessarily reflect Decrypt. Headline: Jim Cramer Sells Bitcoin On-Air After IBM CEO Flags a “3–4 Year” Quantum Risk CNBC’s Jim Cramer announced he was selling his Bitcoin live after asking IBM CEO Arvind Krishna whether future quantum computers could break the cryptography that secures crypto holdings. Krishna’s answer was stark: “I think that you should give yourself three or four years… and at that point, I would get rather paranoid about it.” Cramer didn’t wait. “Arvind Krishna knows quantum incredibly. He knows Bitcoin and quantum. And I’m going to sell mine,” he said, adding that Ethereum could be “even worse.” Market reaction was predictable: Bitcoin rose about 1.6% the day of the announcement, while traders joked about the long-running “inverse Cramer” trade — doing the opposite of whatever he recommends. Cramer’s timing has been criticized before: in December 2022 he said he’d dumped all his crypto “in a million years” when Bitcoin was near $16,800 — and BTC then rallied over 400% across the next three years. Putting Cramer’s track record aside, the quantum concern isn’t just talk. Recent incidents show how rapidly new tech can threaten crypto security: the Coldcard exploit — linked to AI-assisted tooling — has exceeded $100 million in losses, and DeFi protocols have lost well over $300 million in hacks and exploits in recent months. The worrying reality is that AI and quantum capabilities are advancing, and attackers will increasingly leverage them to probe and break cryptographic systems. There is a silver lining: big security incidents can force the industry to harden defenses. Zcash (ZEC), for example, used cutting-edge AI to search for vulnerabilities in its own cryptography, found issues, and patched them — suffering a sell-off that has since largely recovered. Other projects should adopt similar offensive security approaches and act quickly. Bottom line: Cramer’s fear about quantum is not unfounded. Whether his sell decision will again coincide with a market bottom remains to be seen. Also in today’s newsletter: Corporate Treasuries & ETFs, Meme Coin Tracker.
