ChainCatcher report, Kuai Technology, October 19: After the pre-sale launch of Apple’s first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, the initial premium pricing quickly cooled, leaving early bulk buyers facing price cuts on their orders. Zhengzhou mobile phone dealer Xu Shan secured 50 units of the initial batch at a total cost of 999,950 yuan and had already paid a deposit of 25,000 yuan to the supplier. He originally planned to resell them to fellow dealers, expecting a profit of 2,000 yuan per unit, totaling 100,000 yuan for all 50 phones. However, the downstream buyer lowered their purchase offer twice within a single night. The price of 3,500 yuan offered on the morning of October 17 had already fallen below Xu Shan’s cost price plus 4,000 yuan; at the latest quoted price, selling the entire batch would result in an immediate loss of 25,000 yuan. Xu Shan has halted receipt of the goods, stopped paying the remaining balance, and split the order to seek quotes from multiple long-term customers, aiming to find new buyers in batches. Premium resale prices among regular consumers have also shrunk: while some buyers initially planned to sell at a 6,000-yuan markup, secondhand buyers offered a maximum of only a 3,000-yuan premium. Apple opened pre-orders for the iPhone Duo at 8 p.m. on October 16; inventory for in-store pickup on launch day sold out immediately, and some online orders have been delayed until late January next year. According to industry insiders cited in the report, the production ramp-up of the new foldable phone has exceeded expectations, significantly shortening the market’s premium pricing window.
