Intel reported Q2 2026 earnings showing a 59% year-over-year increase in data center and AI revenue, driven by strong on-chain data and rising CPU demand. The company signed 10 long-term supply agreements and highlighted server CPU shortages. Adjusted EPS of $0.42 exceeded forecasts, while the GAAP net loss resulted from a non-cash accounting item tied to the CHIPS and Science Act. Despite revenue growth and improved operating profit, the foundry business remains unprofitable. Inflation data and rising capital costs are expected to keep free cash flow negative through 2027.

Today's observation

Intel reported its fastest revenue growth in nearly a decade this quarter, widely seen as a sign that its transformation is beginning to bear fruit. Although the financial statements show a substantial GAAP net loss, this is not due to deterioration in core operations, but rather a non-cash accounting item: the shares entrusted to the U.S. government under the CHIPS and Science Act have led to a corresponding increase in book obligations as the company’s stock price surged, resulting in a paper loss recognized in the current period; in other words, the stronger the stock price, the larger this paper loss becomes. Excluding this factor, the company is actually profitable, and its operating profit has turned positive.

More noteworthy this quarter is the clear rebound in data center and AI businesses. Management stated that demand for server CPUs has exceeded supply, and the company signed multiple long-term supply agreements this quarter, indicating that this wave of AI is not only boosting GPU demand but also reviving demand for traditional CPUs—a domain where Intel excels. Meanwhile, the company’s guidance for the next quarter also surpassed market expectations.

However, the other side of the transformation remains unchanged: the contract manufacturing business continues to incur losses, capital expenditures remain high, free cash flow is negative, and management expects further increased investments next year. Overall, the direction of improvement has been established, but whether contract manufacturing can reach break-even and when cash outflows will stabilize remain key factors to monitor going forward.

Data per minute

  • Revenue of $16.128 billion, up 25% year-over-year, exceeding expectations of $14.431 billion, marking the fastest growth since Q3 2011.
  • Adjusted EPS of $0.42, exceeding expectations by $0.21; GAAP net loss of $11.033 billion, almost entirely due to a $12.529 billion non-cash revaluation of "custodied shares".
  • Data center and AI demand surged +59% year-over-year, the standout highlight of the quarter; management stated that server CPU demand has "exceeded supply," with 10 long-term supply agreements signed this quarter.
  • Customer revenue amounted to 8.877 billion, up 13% year-over-year; OEM revenue amounted to 5.765 billion, up 31% year-over-year.
  • Q3 Guidance: Revenue median of $16.3 billion and adjusted EPS of $0.38, both significantly exceeding expectations
  • Contract manufacturing still incurred a loss of 2.089 billion; high capital expenditures led to negative adjusted free cash flow (-8.419 billion), and management expects capital expenditures in 2027 to exceed those in 2026.

MSX View

The real story in this earnings report isn't the GAAP loss—it’s a non-cash accounting byproduct: the higher the stock price rises, the larger the paper losses on custodied shares, regardless of how much revenue is generated from ads, cloud, or CPUs. What truly reflects the core business health, sustainability, and comparability is the return to Non-GAAP profitability, the turn to positive GAAP operating profit, and the growth rates of data center and AI businesses: management explicitly stated that server CPU demand "exceeds supply" and signed ten long-term contracts in the first quarter, showing that this AI wave isn’t just driving GPU demand—it’s reigniting demand for CPUs, which is Intel’s core strength. On the other hand, foundry operations still posted a quarterly loss of $2.089 billion, adjusted free cash flow stood at -$8.4 billion, and capital expenditures are set to rise through 2027, indicating that the heavy investments required for this transformation are far from yielding returns. The story is improving, but the foundry’s path to breakeven and cash consumption remain the two most critical signals to watch next; short-term investors should guard against a "buy the rumor, sell the news" pullback.
