An Instagram data leak has impacted 17.5 million users, exposing usernames, email addresses, phone numbers, and physical addresses. The breach, traced back to an API exposure in 2024, has led to on-chain discussions about the increasing risk of phishing attacks. While inflation data trends show no direct connection to the breach, cybersecurity experts are urging users to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) and change their passwords. Malwarebytes has reported that the stolen data is being sold on the dark web. Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has not yet issued a public statement. Affected users have reported receiving frequent password reset emails.

BlockBeats news: On January 11, according to Engadget citing the security company Malwarebytes, Instagram experienced a data breach in which sensitive information of approximately 17.5 million users was exposed, including usernames, email addresses, phone numbers, and physical addresses.

The relevant data has already been sold on the dark web or used for phishing attacks and account takeovers. Malwarebytes stated that this incident may be related to an API exposure issue on Instagram in 2024. Affected users have recently been frequently receiving password reset emails. As of now, Meta has not issued an official response. Security agencies recommend that users enable two-factor authentication (2FA) and change their passwords.
