ICANN87, co-hosted by PANDI, Indonesia’s internet domain name registry, and supported by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs of Indonesia and the Bali Provincial Government, marks the first time ICANN has held an open meeting in Indonesia. The meeting brings together government representatives, businesses, technical experts, and civil society to discuss issues affecting the security, stability, and global interoperability of the internet.
At the welcome ceremony on October 19, remarks were delivered by Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid; PANDI President Isnawan Aslam; ICANN Board Chair Tripti Sinha; and ICANN President and CEO Kurtis Lindqvist.
Meutya Hafid said: “Looking ahead to the next decade, our responsibility is not only to adapt to the ongoing expansion of the internet, but to uphold the trust that makes it meaningful. Connectivity enables participation, growth creates opportunities, and protection builds the trust necessary to sustain both. For Indonesia, the goal is not just to connect more people to the internet, but to ensure they can participate in a digital environment that is accessible, secure, and tailored to their needs.”
Isnawan Aslam stated that hosting ICANN87 is a significant milestone for Indonesia and reflects PANDI’s commitment to the global internet community. “For us, managing .id is not just a technical responsibility; it is also a commitment to safeguarding the nation’s digital identity. We believe that trust comes from proven performance, consistent stability, and responsible governance. Building on our experience and continuously enhancing our capabilities, PANDI remains dedicated to strengthening Indonesia’s digital identity and ensuring that .id is secure, stable, trustworthy, and prepared for the future of the internet.”
ICANN Board Chair Tripti Sinha emphasized the importance of the multi-stakeholder governance model and maintaining public trust. She noted that the tenth anniversary of the IANA stewardship transition demonstrates that this governance model has withstood technological and geopolitical changes. “We continue to earn trust through transparent governance, thoughtful decision-making, and effective implementation.”
Kurtis Lindqvist said: “We need to strengthen the connection between strategy, prioritization, budgeting, and execution to make the process clearer and more transparent. The ICANN community develops solutions, and the ICANN organization must turn these solutions into effective actions.”
ICANN honors Hartmut Glaser for his contributions to capacity building
At the welcome ceremony, ICANN awarded Hartmut Glaser the 2026 Dr. Tarek Kamel Capacity Building Award. The ICANN Board recognized his contributions to internet governance capacity building at local, regional, and global levels, including founding and leading the Brazilian Internet Governance School and helping to establish the Latin American and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (LACNIC). Sinha presented the award on behalf of ICANN, and Glaser participated remotely.
This award honors the late internet pioneer Dr. Tarek Kamel and recognizes ICANN community members who have advanced capacity-building initiatives aligned with ICANN’s mission.
Promote a secure, stable, and inclusive internet
ICANN87 features more than 200 working sessions on internet policy and technical priorities, covering topics such as mitigating DNS abuse, enhancing the security, stability, and reliability of the Domain Name System (DNS), and expanding domain name choices through the new generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) program.
A six-day meeting advances ICANN’s multi-stakeholder governance model, which brings together diverse groups to jointly develop policies and coordinate the internet’s unique identifiers. Participants will also engage in discussions on capacity building and leadership development, while new members of the ICANN Board will be officially installed.

About ICANN
ICANN's mission is to help ensure the global Internet remains stable, secure, and unified.
