Superconducting qubits and silicon-spin qubits each have distinct advantages and drawbacks. Superconducting systems are further along in development but require extreme cooling and face scaling challenges. Silicon-spin qubits, by contrast, are built on the same foundational material as classical computer chips, which theoretically makes them easier to manufacture at scale using existing semiconductor infrastructure.

By acquiring HRL, IBM isn’t abandoning its superconducting roadmap. Jay Gambetta, who leads IBM’s quantum division, framed the deal as essential for “accelerating innovation in quantum computing” while “significantly diversifying IBM’s hardware strategy.”

The deal’s financial terms were not disclosed. HRL’s Malibu-based research team will relocate to IBM’s New York facility to begin chip fabrication.
