DeepChain Overview: In the decentralized perpetuals market, trading volume has traditionally been the primary metric for measuring platform activity; however, in Q3 2026, the on-chain derivatives landscape revealed a highly disruptive divergence. According to the latest authoritative review report from Alea Research, Hyperliquid captured 58.0% of the global open interest, yet accounted for only 38.6% of total trading volume.
This phenomenon—open interest dramatically overshadowing trading volume—has completely shattered the old model of derivatives DEXs relying on short-term, high-frequency trading to create artificial growth. Data shows that Hyperliquid’s traders have the longest average holding period among the top ten largest exchanges globally, with numerous professional institutions and quantitative hedge funds selecting it as their preferred platform for executing spot-futures arbitrage and carry trade strategies, accumulating an exceptionally large volume of sticky institutional capital.
This article provides an in-depth analysis of the competitive landscape across 121 perpetual futures platforms in Q3, examining the explosive growth logic of the HIP-3 native ecosystem, the remarkable data performance of trade.xyz, and how Hyperliquid’s rescue fund channels nearly 90% of fees into repurchasing HYPE tokens to create a powerful value loop.

The tide is receding in the market: perpetual contract trading volume across the network has halved, even as some players expand against the trend.
In the third quarter of 2026, the on-chain perpetual futures market entered a period of overall stagnation and consolidation. Among the 121 decentralized perpetual trading venues tracked globally, total trading volume halved compared to the peak at the end of 2025, with a quarter-over-quarter decline of 2.5% for Q3 globally.
Yet, amid the industry-wide winter, Hyperliquid demonstrated remarkable counter-cyclical resilience. Its Q3 trading volume reached $688.7 billion, growing 9.2% sequentially against the market trend. This propelled its market share of total trading volume to rise for three consecutive quarters, firmly securing its position as the industry leader with 38.6%.
Even more striking is the battle over open interest (OI). Hyperliquid alone accounted for 77% of all new open interest across the industry, maintaining a quarterly daily average OI above $2.1 billion, with a single-day peak surpassing an astonishing 65% of the entire network’s total.

Position Structure Anomaly: Why Are Position Shares Significantly Higher Than Trading Volume Shares?
In traditional derivatives understanding, an exchange's open interest share often closely aligns with its trading volume share; if the volume share is only 38.6%, its open interest would typically be around 40%. Why has Hyperliquid’s open interest share surged to 58.0%?
Through long-term tracking of on-chain wallet positions, Alea Research provides the key insight: Hyperliquid users hold their positions significantly longer than those of other top ten competitors. This is primarily due to the following two factors:
• Zero gas fees and fully on-chain matching: A high-performance L1 architecture built from the ground up for finance, delivering sub-second matching and transparent settlement comparable to centralized exchanges (CEXs), attracting numerous professional hedge funds to use it as their primary position for large-scale basis arbitrage.
• Real liquidity without fabricated volume: Many competing DEXs are flooded with fake wash trades done solely to earn points, resulting in inflated trading volumes but poor capital retention; Hyperliquid’s liquidity is entirely derived from organic trading and arbitrage market-making, ensuring exceptionally solid capital depth.

HIP-3 Innovation Surge: trade.xyz Captures 98% of Native Ecosystem Fees
The most significant technical milestone for the Hyperliquid ecosystem in Q3 was the launch of HIP-3, enabling native spot and customized derivatives markets. Anyone can create independent, dedicated derivatives markets on Hyperliquid L1 through permissionless staking.
Under the HIP-3 framework, trade.xyz has demonstrated remarkable dominance among the two newly launched DEXs, generating a cumulative trading volume of $251.3 billion in Q3 alone—surpassing Aster, the established standalone platform, for the entire quarter ($160.3 billion).
At the ecosystem capture level, trade.xyz generated 97.9% of the fee revenue in the HIP-3 segment, providing Hyperliquid’s underlying blockchain with a continuous stream of real revenue.
7% Fee Buyback and Burn: Building a Strong Token Moat with the Assistance Fund
Faced with substantial fee inflows, Hyperliquid has established an exceptionally pure value capture loop. The report reveals that, during Q3, the platform’s total perpetual contract fee revenue increased by 2.9% quarter-over-quarter to $165.5 million.
Its officially established Assistance Fund uses up to 88.7% of the fees received to continuously purchase HYPE tokens on the open market; additionally, the underlying USDC reserve, valued at tens of billions of dollars, generated an additional $17.7 million in stable cash flow for the Assistance Fund in Q3.
A large and consistent real-money buyback program enabled the HYPE token to demonstrate strong price resilience during the challenging macroeconomic conditions of Q3, establishing a positive, self-reinforcing economic flywheel: "user trading → long-term holding → fee extraction → strong buy support."
