Hyperliquid captured 58% of the perpetual futures trading volume in the decentralized market, with 30-day volume hitting $423 billion. The exchange processes three to four times more trading volume than Aster, its closest rival, with open interest peaking at $13 billion. Built on a custom Layer 1 blockchain, Hyperliquid delivers fast execution and low fees. Perpetual futures on real-world assets like stocks and commodities at times made up over half of its weekly trading volume. Analysts highlight liquidity and execution speed as key factors, though the platform’s dominance raises concerns about systemic risk.

Decentralized perpetual futures exchanges collectively handled $423 billion in trading volume over the past 30 days. Hyperliquid accounted for 58% of it.

One platform is now processing roughly three to four times the volume of its nearest competitor, Aster, and the gap appears to be widening rather than narrowing.

The numbers behind the dominance

Hyperliquid’s 30-day trading volumes have been ranging between roughly $187 billion and $245 billion in recent snapshots. For context, that puts a single decentralized exchange in the same conversation as some mid-tier centralized exchanges that have been around for years.

Open interest on the platform has climbed to between $5 billion and $13 billion across multiple analyses. That figure matters because it signals genuine trader commitment rather than wash trading or fleeting promotional volume.

The platform’s cumulative trading volume is projected at approximately $2.9 trillion, with revenue reaching into the hundreds of millions. For a protocol that launched in 2023, that trajectory is remarkably steep.

Among the top eight perp DEXs tracked, Hyperliquid’s nearest rivals include Aster, Lighter, and a handful of other platforms that collectively split the remaining 42% of market share.

Why this platform keeps winning

Hyperliquid runs on its own custom Layer 1 blockchain. Rather than building on top of Ethereum or another general-purpose chain, the team built infrastructure specifically optimized for order book trading. The result is sub-second execution times, high throughput, and low or zero gas fees.

The platform uses a central limit order book model, or CLOB, which mimics how traditional exchanges like the NYSE or Nasdaq match orders. Most DEXs rely on automated market makers, or AMMs, which use liquidity pools and algorithms to determine prices. The CLOB approach tends to offer tighter spreads and better price discovery, which matters enormously when you’re trading leveraged derivatives where a fraction of a percent can mean the difference between profit and liquidation.

Market analysts have pointed to Hyperliquid’s advantages in liquidity depth and execution quality as the primary drivers of sustained trader engagement.

Real-world assets enter the picture

Hyperliquid now offers perpetual contracts on stocks and commodities, not just crypto tokens. Tokenized real-world assets have at times accounted for over 50% of Hyperliquid’s weekly trading volume.

What this means for the competitive landscape

Hyperliquid’s open interest figures, reaching as high as $13 billion, put it in the range of some well-established centralized venues. The platform is essentially proving that decentralized infrastructure can handle institutional-scale derivative trading without the traditional trade-offs of slow execution and high costs.

The risk, as always with concentrated market share, is systemic. A platform processing hundreds of billions in monthly volume with billions in open interest becomes critical infrastructure. Any technical failure, exploit, or regulatory action would ripple across the entire on-chain derivatives market. Hyperliquid’s custom L1 architecture gives it performance advantages, but it also means the entire system depends on a relatively small set of validators and developers compared to more distributed networks.
