Ethereum Foundation researcher Toni Wahrstätter (@nero_eth) posted that last week, core developers postponed the fork timing to upgrade the Hoodi testnet to Glamsterdam, in order to investigate a report disclosed by security firm ChainSecurity (@chain_security). The report highlighted issues with EIP-8037’s interaction with certain smart contracts. ChainSecurity previously stated it had identified 13 real-world cases and is conducting responsible disclosure with affected projects.
Wahrstätter stated that contracts with hardcoded gas forwarding are inherently affected by repricing of operations such as SSTORE. The newly identified issue is that EIP-8037 breaks a premise relied upon by some code: gas already consumed may be refunded midway through a transaction, causing the gasleft() value to increase. This could lead to two types of risks: first, underflow when subtracting gas counters before and after a call, triggering a revert; second, refunded gas from failed sub-calls may cause code paths that should not be executed to run, making the transaction appear successful. Additionally, since state gas reserves are invisible during execution, measuring gas consumption by the difference in gas before and after a call may underestimate actual usage.
Wahrstätter said that delaying the fork only buys time but does not solve the problem. This week requires a thorough audit of the contract, and further steps may
Hoodi Testnet Glamsterdam Upgrade Delayed Due to EIP-8037 Compatibility Risks
TechFlowShare
The Hoodi testnet’s Glamsterdam upgrade has been delayed as Ethereum developers evaluate compatibility risks with EIP-8037. ChainSecurity identified 13 scenarios in which the upgrade could disrupt gas behavior, impacting smart contracts. Ethereum researcher Toni Wahrstätter stated that deeper audits are required. Traders assessing the risk-to-reward ratio should monitor updates, as crypto trading strategies may require adjustments. The delay underscores the importance of caution in a rapidly evolving market.
