Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) chief executive Eddie Yue Wai-man said on Monday that about 280 leading global bankers will gather in Hong Kong next week. Yue said the participants will include 120 group chairmen and CEOs. Yue said the fifth Global Financial Leaders' Investment Summit will take place from November 2 to 4. Yue named Morgan Stanley chairman Ted Pick, Goldman Sachs chairman David Solomon and Blackstone president and COO John Gray among the attendees.
The summit's theme is "Rethinking the Playbook". Hong Kong announced the city's first five-year plan in September to develop Hong Kong into a technology hub and leading financial centre. In an article released on Monday, Yue said financial leaders will see how Hong Kong is using innovation and technology to transform the city's economy. Yue said those efforts also aim to maintain Hong Kong's competitiveness and forward-looking approach as an international financial centre.
Yue said Hong Kong continues to strengthen the city's position as the world's leading offshore yuan hub by expanding the market's depth and reach. Yue also highlighted efforts to develop a more active fixed income market and a supportive, resilient ecosystem for digital assets and payments. Yue identified new business opportunities in gold and commodities.
The summit will present Hong Kong's new development plans to leading global bankers. A panel of mainland financial regulators is scheduled for November 3. The panel participants have not yet been named. The summit regularly features senior mainland officials or regulators. Yue previously said direct access to information about mainland policies was a major attraction for global bankers.
The programme lists returning participants including HSBC CEO Georges Elhedery, Standard Chartered CEO Bill Winters and BNP Paribas chairman Jean Lemierre. UBS CEO Sergio Ermotti, State Street chairman Ronald O'Hanley and JPMorgan Chase vice-chairman Daniel Pinto will speak at the summit. The Henderson in Central will host the welcome dinner on November 2. The Four Seasons Hotel will host the main discussions on November 3 and 4. Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu will address the main summit on November 3. Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po will deliver a keynote address the following day.
The summit began in 2022 to signal Hong Kong's return to business after the pandemic. Yue said global financial markets have experienced repeated disruptions and major changes driven by technological progress since the inaugural summit. Yue recalled that the previous four years of summits coincided with regional military conflicts, a trade war and blockchain-based technology capable of transforming global financial markets.
Yue argued that artificial intelligence will produce the most consequential and lasting changes. Yue said AI investment and the emergence of winners and losers across industries will substantially affect labour and productivity, adding uncertainty and risk to financial markets. Yue said these changes explain this year's summit theme. Yue said leaders will spend the three days examining macroeconomic trends, changes in financial markets and technological advances that are creating opportunities and risks across sectors, asset classes and regions.
