ME News reports that on October 23 (UTC+8), Heatbit, previously known for its Bitcoin-mining space heaters, announced the launch of Bitwater, a water heater heating element that replaces the standard resistance coil with 20 Bitcoin mining chips. The heat generated by these chips is directly used to warm the water in the tank. Heatbit states that this electricity would have been used anyway for water heating—“the same heat, the same electricity, plus Bitcoin.” The company notes that global household electricity consumption for water heating totals approximately 300 TWh annually, exceeding the Bitcoin network’s total energy use of about 170 TWh, and argues this presents an opportunity to decentralize mining into homes. The Bitwater element uses 20 Bitmain BM1370 chips, delivering up to 34 TH/s of hash rate and consuming up to 600 watts, with an efficiency of 12 joules per TH. Due to water cooling, the device requires no fans and operates silently. Installation is a DIY process: turn off the circuit breaker, drain the tank, unscrew the old element, and use the included wrench to screw in the Bitwater unit. It fits standard one-inch connections on U.S. and Canadian electric water heaters ranging from 30 to 80 gallons, including brands such as A.O. Smith, Rheem, Bradford White, Whirlpool, and GE—no plumbing or electrical modifications are required. Users can monitor water temperature, hash rate, and earnings via an app, and choose between solo mining or joining a mining pool; mined Bitcoin is sent directly to a wallet under the user’s control. The initial “Genesis Batch” is available for pre-order at $899, with later batches priced up to $1,299. Pre-orders are fully refundable, with shipments planned for Q1 2027. Heatbit reports having tested the full system over winter in four- and five-person households in New York and Florida. At the current estimated hash price of approximately $36.73 per PH/s per day, a fully loaded 34 TH/s unit generates roughly $1.25 worth of Bitcoin daily, or about $455 annually.
