- The first spot bitcoin ETF will exit the market on August 17.
- It is a product from Hashdex under the ticker DEFI.
- The fund will sell its assets, liquidate shares, and shut down.
Hashdex announced the liquidation of the Hashdex Bitcoin ETF (DEFI), with trading to cease and the delisting scheduled for August 17, 2026. This is the first spot bitcoin ETF to exit the market.
According to the company’s release, after that date the fund will stop accepting creation orders. Shareholders who do not redeem their shares by the deadline will be eligible for a cash payout.
After the final trading day, the fund will fully liquidate the bitcoin held in its account. It will no longer pursue its stated investment objective or engage in any other activity.
At the same time, Hashdex emphasized that it still manages around $200 million in assets across products available to U.S. investors. This includes the multi-asset crypto fund Hashdex Nasdaq CME Crypto Index ETF, launched in February 2025.
The DEFI fund was not built from scratch, as Hashdex initially filed to convert the Hashdex Bitcoin Futures ETF into a spot bitcoin ETF. The product was also conceived as a hybrid, with the idea that it could hold derivatives on its balance sheet.
DEFI’s assets under management (AUM), according to SoSoValue, stand at $14.7 million, with net inflows of $4.27 million. It ranks last by this metric. Its share relative to other products does not even reach 0.1%.
DEFI is the first spot bitcoin ETF to leave the market. It adds to the broader trend in the sector of project shutdowns and staff reductions.
