Grayscale has expanded in-kind transfers to 10 crypto ETFs, enabling eligible investors to swap crypto directly for shares. This move supports value investing in crypto by reducing conversion costs and streamlining portfolio management. Minimums remain high, with the Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF requiring $364,800. Investors should assess the risk-to-reward ratio before committing, as fees and tax implications apply.

Crypto investors holding substantial amounts of Bitcoin, Solana, or XRP now have another way to bring those holdings into traditional finance without selling their coins first.

Grayscale announced that eligible investors can exchange cryptocurrencies directly for shares in ten of its investment products.

The change removes the usual cash conversion step, potentially cutting trading costs and making crypto easier to manage through brokerage accounts.

For example, a Bitcoin holder could contribute BTC through an approved intermediary and receive shares in the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF.

The investor would keep exposure to Bitcoin’s price while no longer managing the coins personally.

The Catch: Investors Need Up to $365,000

The minimum for Grayscale’s Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF is approximately $364,800. Its Solana Staking ETF starts around $80,300, while Dogecoin’s minimum is $95,550.

XRP requires approximately $257,000.

These figures are based on October 20 prices and can change with the market.

The expansion covers Ethereum, Avalanche, Chainlink, Hyperliquid, Sui and Zcash products too.

Investors seeking Grayscale’s new route must still go through an authorized participant or connected intermediary. Grayscale has not publicly specified who qualifies, and facilitator fees apply.

There are other complications.

  • Contributing crypto may create a taxable event.
  • Transfers can involve execution delays or slippage, and ETF shares can trade above or below the value of their underlying holdings.
  • These products also lack protections associated with funds registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940.

Grayscale’s move could make large crypto portfolios easier to integrate with traditional investing. Whether it attracts genuinely new demand remains an open question.
