Google has officially shortened Chrome's release cycle from four weeks to two weeks. This change has taken effect with the release of Chrome 153 for desktop, iOS, and Android. The company states that evolving security requirements in the AI era are one of the primary reasons for this acceleration.
Security patch window shortened
Google states that automated AI tools and community vulnerability reports are increasing the demand for patches and updates. With an accelerated release schedule, security fixes can reach users' devices faster, reducing the window of time between when vulnerabilities are discovered and when they are patched.
The company specifically noted that reducing the gap between fix commits in the public codebase and users actually receiving updates helps narrow the so-called "N-day" patch gap, meaning attackers have a shorter window to exploit vulnerabilities after they become known.
Browser competition accelerates synchronization speed
Faster updates not only enhance security but also enable Chrome to roll out new features more quickly. Google believes this is equally important in the AI era, as AI-assisted development is driving more browser products to market.
Although OpenAI's previous browser project, ChatGPT Atlas, has been discontinued, several competitors continue to vie for market share, including Brave, Dia, Opera Neon, Perplexity's Comet, and the DuckDuckGo browser.
The industry is beginning to follow suit and adjust.
Google is also testing the integration of more AI features into Chrome and aims to iterate at a faster pace, further increasing the need to shorten release cycles. The report notes that Mozilla, Microsoft, and Brave have already adopted a two-week update schedule.
This is not the first time Chrome has adjusted its release cycle. In 2021, Google shortened the update cycle from six weeks to four weeks to improve patch management efficiency. The further acceleration now reflects that browser vendors are prioritizing security response and feature updates more than ever.
