This personnel shift comes at a critical moment for Google DeepMind: its flagship Gemini model, originally scheduled for release in June, has yet to launch, raising concerns among investors and industry observers that Google is falling behind competitors Anthropic and OpenAI—both of which poached a top AI talent from Google this summer.
Hassabis will assume the newly created role of Chief Scientist at Alphabet and transition from CEO of Google DeepMind to Chairman. Corey Kavukcuoglu, the business unit’s Chief Technology Officer, will take over day-to-day operations, serving as Senior Vice President of the business unit while continuing in his role as Alphabet’s Chief AI Architect.
