Amid the AI funding boom sweeping Wall Street, Goldman Sachs is firmly establishing its market dominance.

On Monday, three AI mega-funding deals totaling at least $210 billion closed simultaneously, with Goldman Sachs named in each transaction. On that day, Goldman Sachs co-led Meta Platforms’ $95 billion stock offering, served as the sole structuring advisor for SpaceX’s $40 billion chip financing, and acted as lead bookrunner for Anthropic’s initial public offering (IPO)—a deal expected to be at least as large as SpaceX’s June listing this year.

These three transactions could generate at least tens of millions of dollars, and possibly up to hundreds of millions of dollars, in revenue for Goldman Sachs.

The AI funding boom is reshaping the competitive landscape on Wall Street. The five largest Wall Street banks have collectively generated over $19 billion in underwriting revenue in the first nine months of this year, with equity capital markets income surging 48% year-over-year and debt underwriting income rising 13%. Goldman Sachs, with its deep integration into the AI ecosystem, is turning this supercycle into tangible business advantages.

$210 billion in a single day: Three transactions highlight Goldman Sachs' comprehensive presence in AI financing.

In the Meta transaction, Goldman Sachs served as co-lead manager, participating in one of the largest equity offerings on Wall Street in recent years. In the SpaceX transaction, Goldman Sachs was not only the sole structuring advisor, but its asset management division also directly invested—this deal involved SpaceX purchasing chips from NVIDIA, with lease financing provided by Apollo Global Management. According to a person familiar with the matter, the transaction originated several months ago when SpaceX proactively reached out to Goldman Sachs.

The arrangement for Anthropic’s IPO caught some market participants by surprise. Previously, Morgan Stanley had been leading efforts to expand Anthropic’s revolving credit facility, and it was widely expected to play a central role in the IPO. According to people familiar with the matter, Goldman Sachs’ relationship with Anthropic is led by bankers Nick Giovanni and Jung Min in San Francisco, with the latter also serving as a key banker for NVIDIA.

After years of deepening relationships, Goldman Sachs' strong position in AI financing has been built up over time.

In June this year, Goldman Sachs served as the lead bookrunner for SpaceX’s IPO, earning $100 million in underwriting fees based on long-standing relationships with senior bankers such as Dan Dees, Kim Posnett, David Ludwig, and Susie Scher. According to Bloomberg earlier this month, Goldman Sachs also earned hundreds of millions of dollars in incentive fees from early investments arranged for its wealthy clients.

Regarding Alphabet, Goldman Sachs served as an advisor on the over $80 billion stock offering for Google’s parent company, one of the largest equity offerings in history, with lead bankers Posnett and Yasmine Coupal also spearheading Monday’s Meta transaction.

To systematically integrate the resource advantages across its various business lines, Goldman Sachs established a Capital Solutions team last year, led by Pete Lyon and Mahesh Saireddy, to coordinate asset management, investment banking, and trading activities in order to design comprehensive financing solutions for clients.

In August this year, Goldman Sachs became the only bank to join NVIDIA’s customer chip transaction financing partnership, committing $500 billion in financing support for related transactions.

The AI funding boom continues to surge, but underlying concerns are quietly emerging. While major Wall Street firms like Goldman Sachs are reaping significant benefits from the AI funding surge, market opinions are diverging on the sustainability of this trend.

As debt and equity inflows into the AI sector continue to rise, coupled with the high capital consumption of cutting-edge AI labs, some market participants are beginning to express concerns about the sustainability of such financing. These concerns are already reflected in the stock and bond performance of certain companies—over the past month, the stock prices of emerging neocloud companies like CoreWeave, which provide computing power specifically for developing and running AI models, have declined significantly.

However, in May of this year, Goldman Sachs President John Waldron said at the Bernstein Annual Strategic Decisions Conference: "We feel we are at the heart of this investment supercycle." This statement may be the most apt description of Goldman Sachs' current situation.
