Gold dropped below $3,900 per ounce on October 30, reaching the lowest price of 2026. Gold now trades about 30% below the January high. Expectations of tighter Federal Reserve policy explain much of the decline, although analysts differ over the potential depth of the correction. The latest decline leaves gold heading toward a second consecutive monthly loss. Repeated recent tests have left $4,000 as a fragile support level.
Strong economic figures from the United States are driving the selling. Third-quarter GDP growth exceeded expectations. September PCE inflation increased 0.5% from the previous month and 3.6% from a year earlier. Traders consequently continue to consider a December Federal Reserve rate increase possible. That expectation remains despite the Federal Reserve's decision this week to leave rates at 3.75% to 4.00%.
Fears about Middle East supplies have pushed oil prices higher, helping keep real yields elevated. Elevated real yields increase the cost of holding gold because gold provides no yield. Speculative selling and withdrawals from ETFs intensified the decline.
Analysts retain a cautious near-term outlook. Standard Chartered's Suki Cooper warned that gold needs to maintain support at $3,886. Cooper warned that a prolonged decline below that level could lead to a deeper correction. JPMorgan Private Bank's Yuxuan Tang also sees additional downside risk. JPMorgan Private Bank forecasts Federal Reserve rate increases in December and early 2027. Those increases could lift 10-year Treasury yields to a peak between 5.25% and 5.50%. Tang said gold will establish a firm bottom when rates peak, citing thin liquidity.
However, longer-term expectations are more positive. A Reuters survey of 30 analysts puts the median gold price forecast at $4,495 for 2026. The survey puts the median forecast for 2027 at $4,650. Cooper anticipates a recovery as attention turns toward de-dollarization and currency debasement.
Traders currently monitor $4,000 as an upside level and $3,886 as a downside level. The next price move could depend on the US midterm elections and the Federal Reserve's December decision.

Gold price movement hit a yearly low below $3,900 per ounce on October 30, pressured by expectations of tighter Fed policy. Price analysis shows the drop follows a 0.5% rise in September PCE inflation and a 3.6% annual increase, raising bets on a December rate hike. Analysts warn of more losses if key support breaks, though a Reuters survey forecasts a median price of $4,495 for 2026 and $4,650 for 2027.
