Gold producers in BMO Capital Markets' coverage universe hold about $19.6 billion more cash than debt. Producers have their strongest balance sheets in two decades and are increasingly positioning for strategic acquisitions. Gold fell as much as 2% on Wednesday, touching $4,075 an ounce. The decline followed a 0.6% rise in September's Consumer Price Index driven by higher fuel costs. Gold declines disproportionately hurt miners, and the VanEck Gold Miners ETF lost 4.40% in the last session.

The Federal Reserve also raised interest rates for the first time since 2023. Bloomberg reported that traders now see a better-than-even chance of another increase in October. Bloomberg reported that traders have priced in three increases by April.

Troy Asset Management fund manager Charlotte Yonge predicted a new gold price record within 12 to 18 months at the Financial Times' Precious Metals Symposium. Yonge called gold an ideal hedge against the worsening state of government finances. Yonge expected central banks to print money during the next recession. The Financial Times quoted Yonge as saying gold cannot be printed in the same way.

Central bank demand is uneven but rebounding. First-half net purchases of 345 tons were the lowest since 2022. Provisional World Gold Council data show central banks bought about 63 tons in September, the most since November 2024. The People's Bank of China holds roughly 2,410 tons of gold, representing 9% of the central bank's reserves. Allied Gold Corporation CEO Peter Marrone said family offices are diversifying away from government bonds in favor of gold. Endeavour Mining CEO Ian Cockerill said $4,000 might not be the gold price floor, but would be very close if not.

Equity investors have not caught up with miners' improving earnings. Sprott Asset Management said the NYSE Arca Gold Miners Index traded at 5.7 times expected operating earnings on September 30. That valuation was about 22% below the index's 20-year average of 7.3 times. Forward earnings per share have risen about 4.4-fold since the end of 2023. Maison Placements Canada President John Ing wrote in a September report that gold miners have become value investments. However, doubts remain about costs, operational setbacks and the overspending that followed the 2011 boom, leaving wide differences between companies.

BMO Capital Markets puts Agnico Eagle Mines at 7.3 times forecast 2026 EBITDA, compared with 3.5 times for Barrick Mining Corporation. Balance sheets are far healthier than during the previous bull cycle. Sprott director of research and investment strategy Kenny Zhu said net debt levels have fallen to their lowest point in 20 years. Agnico leads with $3.3 billion in net cash. Barrick has $1.2 billion in net cash.

Replacing reserves is now a challenge for miners. Ing wrote that reserve replacement is essential, but few miners have succeeded, suggesting continued merger and acquisition activity.
