ChainCatcher report: According to official announcements, Gnosis Chain will end its independent L1 operations in spring 2027 and join the Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ), becoming the first general-purpose Zone to settle on Ethereum.
The Gnosis Chain will migrate on-chain state via a hard fork, with contracts, balances, addresses, chain ID, and the gas token xDAI all remaining unchanged, so developers do not need to redeploy. Friederike Ernst, co-founder of Gnosis, stated in the article that due to the impossibility of simultaneously achieving fast block times, Ethereum-compatible composability, and decentralized sequencing, Gnosis chose the first two, meaning the current validator set of approximately 200,000 independent validators on Gnosis Chain will not be retained after the migration. She also revealed that the Gnosis DAO currently spends between $7 million and $10 million annually to operate the independent L1, Gnosis Chain.
Additionally, EEZ’s Devnet Rollup X has launched its testnet today at Devcon Mumbai, with several demonstrations completed: CoW Swap executed an exchange within a single transaction using Ethereum mainnet liquidity on Rollup X; Safe achieved atomic owner changes between L1 and L2; and Rollup X successfully verified Falcon post-quantum signatures and made them available for mainnet calls, reducing mainnet gas consumption from approximately 5.5 million to about 495,000—a 91% reduction. Rollup X remains a test network while its core protocol undergoes independent security audits. EEZ is a Swiss nonprofit organization co-funded by the Ethereum Foundation.
Previously, Gnosis co-founder Friederike Ernst and Zisk founder Jordi Baylina collaborated to launch the Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) framework, designed to address issues such as liquidity fragmentation caused by L2 fragmentation.

Gnosis Chain will cease L1 operations in spring 2027 and join the Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ), becoming the first general-purpose Zone to settle on Ethereum. The migration will occur via a hard fork, preserving contracts, balances, and the Gas token xDAI. This on-chain announcement signals a major shift in Ethereum news, as the chain transitions away from 200,000 independent validators. Annual operating costs for Gnosis as an L1 currently range from $7 million to $10 million. EEZ’s Devnet Rollup X has launched a testnet and demonstrated a 91% reduction in mainnet Gas fees.
