Genspark just did something that should make Google and Microsoft at least mildly uncomfortable. The AI startup, founded by former Baidu executives, released GenOffice as a fully open-source desktop office suite on August 3, complete with AI-native document editing, spreadsheets, presentations, and PDF tools. The entire codebase is now live on GitHub under the Apache License 2.0.
That means anyone can fork it, modify it, and redistribute it. For free. With no ads.
What GenOffice actually is
GenOffice is a desktop application available for both macOS and Windows that handles the four file formats most office workers live inside: .docx, .xlsx, .pptx, and .pdf. The platform ships with what Genspark calls a “Super Agent,” an embedded AI system that powers advanced editing and automation features across all four document types. The core suite is free and ad-free. The AI-powered features operate on a credit system, where users spend Genspark credits to access the more sophisticated capabilities.
Contributors to the open-source project can earn over 1,000 credits. The current release is version 0.4.110, available with signed installers. Genspark has been transparent that this is still an Alpha stage product with known bugs and missing features.
Built in a week for $10,000
Perhaps the most eyebrow-raising detail is the development timeline. Genspark claims the Alpha version was created by a single engineer in approximately one week, at a cost of around $10,000 in AI tokens.
Genspark unveiled GenOffice during the AGI Playground 2026 event, positioning it as the first fully-featured open-source AI office suite. The company has also previously built Microsoft Office plugins and mobile app functionalities, suggesting GenOffice isn’t a pivot but rather an expansion of Genspark’s broader productivity ambitions.
The company behind the code
Genspark isn’t some garage startup running on fumes. The company has raised hundreds of millions of dollars in funding and achieved unicorn status, meaning a valuation north of $1 billion. That kind of financial backing from a team with deep search and AI experience (Baidu is essentially China’s Google) makes GenOffice a more credible threat than the typical open-source passion project.
The Apache License 2.0 choice is also worth noting. It’s one of the most permissive open-source licenses available, allowing commercial use, modification, and distribution with minimal restrictions.
