GamerLegion walked into the IEM Beijing 2026 Closed Qualifier on September 2 without enough players to actually play. The German esports organization forfeited its opening match against Nuclear TigeRES after failing to field an eligible roster, putting itself in an immediate hole in a tournament where margins are razor-thin.
The culprit was a combination of bad timing and bad luck. In-game leader Snax was unavailable due to a pre-scheduled medical appointment, while Sebastian “Tauson” Lindelof was sidelined by ongoing health issues. Two players down, no viable lineup, no match.
What’s at stake in the qualifier
The IEM Beijing 2026 Closed Qualifier is a three-day online European event running from September 2 to 4. Sixteen teams are competing for just two spots at the main event in China. That’s an 87.5% elimination rate before anyone even books a flight.
The format is double elimination, which means GamerLegion isn’t out yet. But starting in the lower bracket after a forfeit means every subsequent match becomes a must-win, and the team will need to string together a series of victories just to stay alive.
A recurring problem for the roster
This isn’t the first time GamerLegion has dealt with availability issues. The team has previously been forced to use stand-ins like Pavle “Maden” Boskovic to fill gaps created by similar roster disruptions.
GamerLegion’s competitive trajectory
Founded in 2017, GamerLegion has built itself into a recognized presence in the CS2 competitive scene. The organization’s current roster features players like REZ, FL4MUS, and hypex alongside Snax and Tauson. At their best, this group has delivered notable results, including a grand-final appearance at IEM Atlanta.
The health issues affecting Tauson add another layer of concern. “Ongoing” health problems, by definition, don’t resolve themselves on a tournament’s schedule. If Tauson’s availability remains uncertain for the rest of the qualifier, GamerLegion will need contingency plans even for the matches where they do compete.

Two qualifier spots, 16 teams, and three days. GamerLegion burned the first day without firing a shot. The remaining two will determine whether this forfeit becomes a footnote or the defining moment of their IEM Beijing campaign.
