According to Bijié Wǎng, France accounts for approximately 25% of global 'wrench attacks' against cryptocurrency holders, according to Casa Chief Security Officer Jameson Lopp. These attacks involve physical violence, including kidnapping, torture, and coercion, to force victims to hand over private keys or transfer crypto. In January, Ledger co-founder David Bolondi and his wife were kidnapped near Vierzon, with kidnappers demanding a 10 million euro ransom. French authorities rescued the couple after nearly 60 hours and arrested five suspects. In May, another high-profile case involved the father of an unnamed crypto entrepreneur, who was kidnapped and electrocuted, with ransom demands in the millions. Also in May, the daughter and young son of Paymium CEO were targeted in a daylight kidnapping attempt in Paris, thwarted by the father and neighbors. In June, a 23-year-old private crypto investor was kidnapped in a Paris suburb and forced to hand over a bag containing a hardware wallet and cash. Last week, six men, including two minors, were arrested in France for planning a kidnapping to rob crypto.
