ChainCatcher report: Summer Mersinger, former commissioner of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), will step down as CEO of the industry advocacy group Blockchain Association at the end of the year and leave the organization. The group announced on Friday that Mersinger will officially depart on October 16, and her predecessor, Kristin Smith, will return as interim CEO. Mersinger joined Blockchain Association in June 2025, having left the CFTC three years before the end of her second term. In discussing her departure, Mersinger stated that she came from the CFTC because she believed the industry deserved clear rules and a credible, unified voice in Washington. In its statement, Blockchain Association highlighted Mersinger’s work advancing the GENIUS Act and helping achieve regulatory clarity between the SEC and CFTC. Notably, the organization did not mention the Digital Asset Market Clarification Act currently under consideration in the Senate. That bill recently failed to secure sufficient support from both Democratic and Republican senators in a procedural vote, and many experts expect the legislation to be shelved until 2027. Blockchain Association did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding Mersinger’s plans for 2027.
