Key Insights:

  • Crypto market in focus as Beth Hammack supports immediate rate hikes, arguing that current policy does not sufficiently restrain economic activity.
  • July PPI rose 4.7% annually, below the 4.9% forecast and down from 5.5% in June.
  • Bitcoin traded near $63,616 as markets assessed Hammack’s hawkish stance.

Cleveland Federal Reserve President Beth Hammack has renewed her call for immediate U.S. interest rate increases. Her position keeps monetary policy in focus for the crypto market and U.S. stocks.

Hammack argues that current borrowing conditions provide insufficient restraint as inflation stays above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. Meanwhile, July producer inflation cooled more than economists had expected, sending a contrasting message to policymakers and markets.

Crypto Market in Focus as Hammack Calls for Higher Interest Rates

Hammack outlined her policy position Thursday during an appearance at the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce in Ohio, Bloomberg reported. She said business activity still points to strong demand for financing, borrowing, investment, and expansion.

According to Hammack, businesses continue identifying growth opportunities without reporting substantial pressure from current interest rates. Consequently, she believes monetary policy needs additional restraint to reduce inflation toward the Federal Reserve’s 2% objective.

Hammack also raised concerns about allowing inflation to stay above target for several more years. She previously delivered a similarly hawkish policy assessment Monday during an interview with Yahoo Finance.

During that interview, Hammack said current interest rates were not meaningfully restricting economic activity. She also called for an unspecified number of additional rate increases.

Notably, Hammack argued that one 25-basis-point increase would have limited influence on the broader economy. Her comments therefore point toward more than one adjustment if policymakers follow her preferred approach.

US Producer Inflation Cools in July

However, Thursday’s producer inflation report provided policymakers with a softer inflation reading. The U.S. Producer Price Index was unchanged month over month during July.

Markets had expected a 0.2% monthly increase. Meanwhile, June’s reading was revised to a 0.1% decline.

Annual producer inflation also slowed during July. The PPI increased 4.7% from one year earlier, compared with 5.5% during June.

Economists had expected a 4.9% annual increase. Therefore, both monthly and annual producer inflation came below market expectations.

The PPI data followed Wednesday’s Consumer Price Index report. Together, the figures place falling producer inflation alongside Hammack’s argument that broader inflation still requires tighter policy.

Crypto Market and Stocks Face Rate Scenarios

Meanwhile, Hammack’s preferred policy path presents a clear rate scenario for financial markets. If policymakers adopt her position, the Federal Reserve would raise its policy rate from current levels.

That scenario would move Bitcoin, other cryptocurrencies, and stocks into a higher-rate environment. Markets would then assess each policy increase alongside incoming inflation readings and economic activity.

Alternatively, policymakers could place greater weight on cooling producer inflation before changing rates. July PPI data already showed weaker monthly and annual price growth than markets expected.

A third scenario could combine additional inflation data with continued debate among Federal Reserve officials. Hammack’s comments establish the hawkish side of that discussion, while July PPI provides fresh evidence of easing producer pressures.

For the crypto market, the immediate data showed differing, albeit small, price movements across major assets. At the time of writing, Bitcoin traded above $63,600, while Ethereum stayed below $1,900. At the same time, XRP stood near $1.01, Solana traded near $75.95, and BNB changed hands around $608.20.
