Ethereum ETF outflows hit $1 billion between October 1 and 22, according to Farside Investors. Santiment tracked a 169,770 ETH withdrawal from exchanges on October 23, valued at $407 million. This marked the largest inflows/outflows event in four months. Centralized exchange outflows suggest strong movement into private wallets. Fourteen of 16 sessions saw net outflows in the ETF category.

Santiment reported on October 23 that about 169,770 ETH left centralized exchanges on net during one day, the largest daily withdrawal in more than four months. The withdrawal had a value of about $407 million using a reference price of $2,400. The previous larger withdrawal occurred on June 5, when roughly 223,800 ETH left exchanges near a point Santiment describes as a local buying opportunity. The June withdrawal exceeded the October withdrawal by about 32%.

Exchange balances indicate how many coins are immediately available to sell on centralized venues, and substantial net withdrawals can reduce that inventory. A single earlier example supports a hypothesis rather than a reliable trading rule. Withdrawn coins may enter self-custody, staking or institutional custody, but the data does not identify the owners or motives.

However, Farside Investors' daily figures showed US spot Ethereum ETFs recorded more than $1 billion in net outflows between October 1 and October 22. Farside's data showed net outflows during 14 of those 16 sessions. October 13 recorded a $25 million inflow. October 21 recorded a $15 million inflow, followed by a $111 million outflow the next day. Farside's table listed a preliminary inflow of $4 million for October 23, with one fund's figure not yet available. Santiment monitors coin transfers between tracked exchange addresses and other destinations. Farside measures net money movements into and out of regulated funds, using units and periods different from Santiment's measures.

Alpha Finance's October 23 tracker showed that 60% of eligible major altcoins outperformed Bitcoin over 90 days. Alpha Finance's seven-day reading showed 27% outperforming Bitcoin. The index requires at least 75% outperformance over 90 days to identify altcoin season, leaving the 60% reading below that threshold. An Ethereum-specific recovery can occur alongside weakness in smaller tokens. ETH/BTC and seven-day altcoin breadth would help distinguish an Ethereum-specific recovery from a broader shift into altcoins. Trader 0xsweep wrote on October 17 that whales were "building ETH longs like there's no tomorrow."

Technology shares led a broader retreat from risk. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.6% to 26,009 on October 22 amid concerns about AI spending, the index's sharpest decline since June. The Dow was approximately unchanged. The Russell 2000 rose slightly. The Fed increased its target range to between 3.75% and 4% in September. The Fed meets on October 27 and 28. Treasury yields declined sharply on October 22 as investors sought safety, reflecting a market facing both inflation concerns and demand for safer assets.

Santiment uses $2,400 as a reference price and treats $2,500 as a conditional technical level that would strengthen the rebound case. Santiment treats about $2,330 as a conditional technical level that would weaken that case. A move from $2,400 to $2,500 represents a 4.2% increase. A move from $2,400 to $2,330 represents a 2.9% decrease.

The withdrawal signal would gain demand support if ETH stays above $2,500 while withdrawals persist, ETF flows remain positive for several sessions and seven-day altcoin breadth recovers toward 50%. The withdrawal would look like an isolated supply event unable to prevent further declines if ETH falls below $2,330 while redemptions persist and seven-day breadth approaches 25%. Market expectations of a more hawkish Fed or another energy-price surge would increase the risk of that downside scenario.
