BlockBeats report: On August 26, Ethereum researchers proposed an early draft to restructure the validator deposit contract to support varying key lengths and multiple cryptographic signature schemes, preparing for future adoption of quantum-resistant signatures. The current contract hardcodes BLS key sizes, meaning the network cannot directly accept new quantum-resistant schemes even if developers identify them.
The draft will label the cryptographic system used for each deposit, with BLS assigned the label 0, and all other labels reserved for future schemes. If the proposal is approved, the new signature system can be integrated alongside BLS; Ethereum may later permanently cease accepting new BLS deposits via a separate decision, but validators already participating in staking with BLS keys will not be immediately exited. The draft currently uses a temporary number, and maintainers have suggested assigning it the identifier EIP-8394.
As of Wednesday, approximately 42.4 million ETH are staked on Ethereum, valued at around $104 billion, all secured by BLS validator keys. In March of this year, Google Quantum AI identified five potential quantum attack vectors targeting Ethereum, threatening over $100 billion in assets across wallets, staking, smart contracts, and Layer 2 solutions. The Ethereum Foundation currently plans to implement necessary adjustments at the core protocol level by approximately 2029.
