Ethereum researchers have proposed a new consensus mechanism called "Decoupled Consensus" via a Core EIP draft. Led by Ben Edgington, the plan aims to separate validators’ block and finality votes on the Beacon Chain, targeting post-quantum migration, improved fork-choice security, and faster finality confirmation. Co-authors include Francesco D’Amato and others. The design draws inspiration from Nakamoto consensus while being adapted for future upgrades.

PANews, October 22: According to the GitHub page, Ethereum researcher Ben Edgington has submitted a Core EIP draft titled “Decoupled Consensus” to the ethereum/EIPs repository, proposing a new consensus mechanism for the beacon chain. Under this draft, validators’ votes on the available chain head would be separated from finality proofs. The draft outlines three objectives: laying the groundwork for future post-quantum (PQ) migration, enhancing the security of fork choice, and reducing finality confirmation time. Co-authors of the draft include Francesco D’Amato, Roberto Saltini, Yann Vonlanthen, and Mikhail Kalinin.
