Ethereum news: The Ethereum Foundation’s protocol team has set a goal to make Ethereum’s mainnet fully quantum-resistant by December 2029. The plan includes upgrades to the execution, consensus, and data layers, with a focus on replacing outdated cryptographic systems. The target date will remain fixed until January 2027, after which progress will be reviewed. Ethereum ecosystem news: The next upgrade, Glamsterdam, is scheduled for December 2026, with full quantum readiness potentially requiring five additional hard forks.
CoinDesk reports:

The Ethereum Foundation Protocol Team has unveiled a new roadmap proposing that the Ethereum mainnet achieve full quantum resistance by December 2029. The team stated they do not wish to wait until the quantum threat becomes imminent before taking action, and have therefore set an internal deadline.

Cover the three main parts of the mainnet

This roadmap covers the three core components of Ethereum: execution, consensus, and data. The foundation plans to first replace the existing vulnerable cryptographic system, then gradually introduce post-quantum signature schemes to mitigate risks posed by future quantum computers.

Reevaluated in 2027

The foundation stated that the target of December 2029 will not be adjusted before January 2027. At that time, the team will reassess the progress of quantum computing to determine the subsequent pace of advancement.

Upgrade schedule and subsequent arrangements

According to the current plan, Ethereum’s next Glamsterdam upgrade is targeted for December 2026. If one path is followed, full quantum resistance may require five additional hard forks after that; the alternative path would progress toward the minimum viable goal at a slower 12-month pace. The Foundation also considers the subsequent Hegotá upgrade to be a critical prerequisite for achieving this goal.
