According to DL News, the Ethereum Foundation officially released its quantum-resistant upgrade roadmap on Tuesday, planning to complete the initial L1 protocol upgrades by 2029, with full execution layer migrations to follow over the subsequent years. The roadmap centers on four key hard forks: Fork "I" will provide quantum-resistant public keys for network validators; Fork "J" aims to reduce the gas costs required to verify quantum-resistant signatures. Both upgrades have been included as candidate features for the upcoming Hegota fork expected later this year. Fork "L" will compress the blockchain state into zero-knowledge proofs; Fork "M" will provide quantum resistance for Layer 2 networks. The Ethereum Foundation stated that quantum computing will eventually break the public-key cryptography currently securing ownership, authentication, and consensus mechanisms, but expects quantum computers with cryptographic threat capabilities to be 8 to 12 years away. The Foundation formed a dedicated quantum research team in January and emphasized that "work must begin before the threat arrives."

The Ethereum Foundation has unveiled a roadmap for a network upgrade focused on quantum resistance, aiming to finalize the first L1 protocol update by 2029. The plan involves four key hard forks: the 'I' fork introduces quantum-safe public keys for validators, while the 'J' fork aims to reduce gas costs for quantum-resistant signatures. Both could be included in the Hegota fork this year. The 'L' fork will compress the blockchain state using zero-knowledge proofs, and the 'M' fork will secure Layer 2 with quantum-resistant technology. A dedicated quantum research team was established in January, emphasizing that blockchain upgrade efforts must begin early to counter future threats.
