Ethereum Foundation launched the BPO-1 network upgrade on December 10, 2025, expanding Layer 2 capacity. The blockchain upgrade allows each block to carry up to 15 data blobs, improving scalability for Layer 2 platforms like Optimism and Arbitrum. Transaction costs are expected to drop, with throughput and user experience set to improve. A follow-up network upgrade, BPO-2, is planned for January 2026 to further boost capacity.
