PANews, August 13: Justin Drake, researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, tweeted that the Ethereum Foundation has decided to abandon Poseidon hashing on L1 in favor of traditional hash functions SHA or BLAKE. Since 2018, the Ethereum Foundation has invested in “SNARK-friendly hashing.” Poseidon, introduced in 2019, became mainstream and is widely used by numerous zkRollups and zkVMs.

Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake revealed that the foundation will no longer use the Poseidon hash function on L1, opting instead for SHA-256 or BLAKE. Poseidon, a popular choice among zkRollups and zkVMs since 2019, is being phased out in favor of more traditional hash functions. This shift reflects a move toward established hash function standards in Ethereum’s core infrastructure, with SHA-256—a widely adopted hash function—now emerging as a leading candidate for integration.
