Ethereum’s upcoming blockchain upgrade, Glamsterdam, is set to increase the gas limit from 60 million to 200 million, a 3.3x increase. According to researcher Toni Wahrstätter, the Hoodi testnet marks the final phase before the mainnet upgrade. Scheduled for October 26, 2026, the update will include proposer-builder separation and block-level access lists. A potential future gas limit of 300 million may be considered, but it is not part of the current plan. The mainnet activation date will be confirmed once client teams complete their preparations. The Hegotá upgrade, expected in 2027, will be Ethereum’s final major network upgrade before a deeper cryptographic shift.
CoinDesk reports:

According to Ethereum researcher Toni Wahrstätter, Hoodi is the final testnet before Glamsterdam reaches mainnet. This upgrade is expected to bring significant changes to Ethereum’s gas limit, with the proposed limit increasing from 60 million to 200 million.

This means the Gas limit will increase by approximately 3.3 times; whether more computations and transactions can fit in each block depends on their respective Gas requirements.

Following its activation on Sepolia on October 6, the Glamsterdam network upgrade is now scheduled for the Hoodi testnet. Glamsterdam advances Ethereum’s L1 scaling roadmap through embedded proposer-builder separation, block-level access lists, and gas pricing changes that better reflect the costs of execution and state growth.

The Glamsterdam network upgrade will activate at Hoodi's epoch 132,352, slot 4,235,264, which is October 26, 2026, at 17:42:48 UTC. Concurrently, Hoodi's gas limit will be increased to 200 million via the Gas Limit Program, aligning with the Sepolia testnet.

Wahrstätter stated that, following the proposed 200 million target, raising the Ethereum gas limit to 300 million could be the next step in reality. However, this figure should be viewed as a potential future milestone rather than a confirmed part of the Glamsterdam upgrade.

According to Ethereum developers, the activation time for the Glamsterdam upgrade on mainnet will be announced after the client teams make their decision.

Hegotá is currently targeting a 2027 launch.

As Glamsterdam approaches its final stage, preparations for Hegota are also progressing. According to Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin, Hegota, planned for next year, may become Ethereum’s last “normal” fork, with features and technology still recognizable to those from 2015.

Everything that follows will involve recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, highly optimized consensus algorithms, and making the system quantum-resistant. With the introduction of PeerDAS, Ethereum is beginning to transform from a single blockchain into a more powerful system.

Starting with Hegotá, this shift will become Ethereum’s central narrative. The result will be a cryptographically secured world computer. Ethereum researcher Toni Wahrstätter notes that Hegotá is considering 23 EIPs, with two key proposals being FOCIL and Frame Transactions.
