Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO, predicts AI will reshape the workforce by cutting routine tasks and reducing coordination needs in business. He cited FLASH AI as a key example, noting AI could lead to fewer meetings and greater efficiency. Schmidt warned of potential job losses but emphasized opportunities for those who adapt. He urged younger workers to embrace AI. On-chain news suggests growing interest in AI + crypto news as the two fields increasingly intersect.

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt says business AI platforms can eliminate much of the time companies spend coordinating work. Schmidt described 60-hour workweeks dominated by meetings, alongside additional weekend work. Schmidt estimated that his total workweek was roughly 63 hours. Schmidt, 71, spent much of that time coordinating employees and resolving problems throughout the organization.

Schmidt discussed that schedule with Nicolai Tangen, CEO of Norges Bank Investment Management. Schmidt said meetings occupied 12 hours daily, five days weekly, and Schmidt also worked on weekends. Schmidt believes AI can increasingly perform tasks that previously demanded lengthy meetings and discussions between departments.

Schmidt said an unnamed friend recently dismissed 20% of the friend's workforce. Schmidt said the dismissed employees included people who planned work, coordinated activities and moved information through the business. Schmidt expects such workforce reductions to become more frequent as AI improves business efficiency. Schmidt estimated that a company employing 10,000 people might have a couple of thousand employees the company no longer needs. Schmidt said employers should arrange lawful and humane transitions or retirement for those employees.

Schmidt has an estimated net worth of $66 billion and is expected to benefit substantially from the AI boom. Schmidt's ownership of roughly 1% of Anthropic became public this week. That stake could produce a $20 billion windfall if Anthropic goes public at its $2 trillion target.

However, Schmidt also sees opportunities for workers who adapt to AI and help develop the technology. Schmidt said businesses will continue to need accomplished inventors, salespeople, leaders and people who communicate with government. Schmidt urged Generation Z to adopt AI rather than risk falling behind.

Schmidt encouraged University of Arizona graduates earlier this year to help build AI instead of resisting the technology. Some students booed Schmidt when Schmidt began discussing AI. Schmidt told graduates that AI would become part of work regardless of their chosen careers. Schmidt encouraged graduates to apply AI to problems that previously seemed impossible and to accept opportunities to participate in the technology's development.
