Elon Musk said on Sunday that Musk will give shares directly to the public after Anthropic announced a public-benefit fund. Musk is CEO of Space Exploration Technologies Corp. and leads rival AI company xAI. Anthropic, the developer of Claude AI, announced plans to allocate 5% of its shares to the new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. The fund is designed to support initiatives serving the public interest. Musk recommended on X that Anthropic give shares directly to the public. Musk added, "This is what I will be doing," without providing details about how or when Musk plans to distribute shares.
Anthropic said the company would establish the fund as a wholly owned limited liability company. Anthropic's board could award the fund an additional 2% of Anthropic's shares for every 50% increase in Anthropic's valuation above an undisclosed baseline. The proposed fund could finance nonprofit organizations, provide direct payments to specific populations and support efforts addressing AI's effects on the labor market. Anthropic said the company would not use the fund's shares for lobbying or political contributions in the U.S. or abroad.
Anthropic previously committed $200 million to studying and responding to potential labor-market disruption caused by AI adoption. Companies across industries are increasingly deploying AI to improve efficiency. Some companies have cited AI when announcing job cuts. International Monetary Fund research indicates that AI could affect around 40% of jobs globally. The research puts that share at 60% in advanced economies.
Anthropic is preparing for a potential initial public offering. Anthropic operates as a public benefit corporation, requiring management to consider broader public interests alongside shareholder returns. Anthropic said the company's co-founders have pledged to donate 80% of the co-founders' equity. Anthropic said an employee donation-matching program will support the company's broader public-benefit commitments. Roughly 20% of Anthropic's shares are expected to be dedicated to public purposes through the combined commitments, excluding future additions.
Anthropic warned earlier this month in the company's IPO prospectus that shifting U.S. AI policies, federal restrictions and export controls could hurt Anthropic's reputation and revenue. Anthropic also flagged potential "catastrophic or existential risks" from advanced AI. Government contracts account for less than 1% of Anthropic's annual revenue. President Donald Trump struck a warmer tone toward Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei after a recent meeting. Trump told Time that Amodei made a better impression on Trump than before.
