Odaily Planet Daily report: The Ethereum Improvement Proposal EIP-8363 ("Tapered Issuance Burn") has sparked strong backlash from the community, becoming one of the most contentious discussions regarding Ethereum’s economic model since The Merge. Proposed by Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake, ETHCC co-founder Jerome de Tychey, and others, the proposal aims to gradually reduce validator rewards as the ETH staking ratio increases, ultimately bringing new issuance to zero when staked ETH reaches 50% of total supply.
However, the proposal has faced opposition from DeFi developers, staking service providers, institutional investors, and others. Critics argue that reducing staking yields could undermine network decentralization, disrupt the Ethereum DeFi ecosystem, and increase uncertainty around Ethereum’s monetary policy. Opponents contend that market mechanisms are already capable of naturally regulating staking levels. Berryman noted that as yields decline to around 2%, new staking demand may naturally slow without the need for policy changes at the protocol level.
Mike Silagadze, founder of Ether.fi, stated that the proposal is "detrimental to decentralization, Ethereum adoption, and network reputation." Steve Berryman, Head of Ethereum Business at Bitwise, also noted that institutional investors require policy certainty, and adjusting the issuance mechanism could introduce additional uncertainty. Greg Koumoutsos, Head of Technical Research at Lido Labs Foundation, pointed out that Ethereum pays not only for "punishable ETH" but also for decentralization, node diversity, censorship resistance, and network resilience. Stani Kulechov, founder of Aave, also warned that reducing ETH staking yields could impact the DeFi ecosystem, as a significant portion of staking derivatives have become essential components of lending and yield strategies.
In addition, the community is concerned that reducing staking rewards could exacerbate centralization trends. Since individual validators lack economies of scale, lower yields may drive small nodes to exit, while large exchanges and institutional staking providers—benefiting from greater business demand—may continue to expand their market share.
Currently, EIP-8363 has sparked widespread discussion not only on staking reward adjustments but also on Ethereum’s long-term monetary policy, governance stability, and institutional confidence. The community believes that such a significant change to the economic model requires more thorough discussion and a longer evaluation period. (Cointelegraph)
